DR. ABDOLLAH MALEK: Liposuction is another wonderful procedure that we have in our available tools. Many, many ladies they do have area of the genetic disposition of the fat. It could be underneath the chin or it could be around the breast or it could be around the abdomen or hips or lateral thighs, which are genetically pre-disposed. And interestingly they are very hard to get rid of. The fat around the abdomen, around the hip, and lumbar area, is genetically different than the fat that we have in other parts of the body and they are far more resilient to get rid of them. Now we have a saying that they are the first place you gain and they are the last place you lose. So in those ladies, liposuction can be an extremely important tool. And the beauty of liposuction--and I always take a minute to tell all my patients that fat is very beautiful. But fat at the right place is beautiful and if not at the right place is not as beautiful.

So what we do, we actually like to use a term liposculpture or liposelection. It means that you remove the fat from where we do not want it and occasionally we put it where we want it. For example, removal of the fat around the mid-torso of the abdomen and lumbar area actually accentuates and increases the shape of the buttocks and hips because as we all can see and when we are standing in front of the mirror, that we connect our breast and hips together with the mid-torso which is abdomen. So if our abdomen and lumbar area and hip area is sculptured, the buttock looks better and the breast looks better. So liposuction has been and is a very, very wonderful tool in using in doing this problem.

We have a variety of methods including tumescent which are sonic and power assisted and there are all different modalities we can use for different patients but is overall the wonderful tool and has been around for a long time.
